About This Grant
Abstract Each year, approximately ½ million people in the U.S. sustain and receive medical treatment for burn injuries. Pain is particularly prevalent (>50% of burn survivors) and disabling following burns, and both burn- related tissue injury as well as the procedures required for wound care can initiate severe and long-lasting chronic pain. As pain is known to be strongly modulated by negative affect, and catastrophizing in particular, the pain-reducing effects of many non-pharmacologic treatments appear to be due partially to their effects on cognitive-emotional processes such as catastrophizing. For example, studies of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) frequently identify catastrophizing as a critical mechanistic variable, reductions in which are linked to improvements in pain, and CBT has been shown to improve pain in several studies with burn-injury survivors. Importantly, the neurobiology supporting catastrophizing in burn survivors is unknown and objective catastrophizing-lin
This is a federal grant announcement. Review these terms and key sections before you start drafting.
A NOFO is the official document a federal agency publishes to announce available grant funding. It is the rulebook for the grant — every requirement, restriction, and evaluation criterion lives in it. Other names for the same thing: FOA, RFA, PA, NOFA, SGA. (RFP usually means a contract, not a grant.)
Eligibility
Who can and cannot apply — confirm your organization type is explicitly listed. Many NOFOs restrict to 501(c)(3)s, specific entity types, or geographic areas.
Deadline
Note the full application deadline AND any required Letter of Intent (LOI) date, which is often 30–60 days earlier.
Funding Amount
Min/max award and total program funding — this sets your budget ceiling. Some NOFOs list an expected number of awards.
Required Attachments
Every form, biosketch, budget narrative, and letter of support — missing even one can trigger automatic rejection. Make a checklist.
Review Criteria
How the application is scored (e.g., 40% significance, 30% approach, 20% investigator, 10% environment). Weight your narrative toward the highest-scoring criteria.
Page Limits
Strict page or character limits per section — exceeding them can disqualify your application. Note the font size, margin, and formatting rules too.
Pro tip: Read the NOFO three times before writing. Most rejected applications fail because the applicant didn't follow the instructions — not because the project was bad.
